This does not happen with all powerpoint files. Please note, powerpoint opens the files and then crashes between 20 and 60 seconds later. I then installed powerpoint using the latest versions. Before I made this post, I uninstalled the last version of powerpoint I had using the instructions you suggested. They open in Powerpoint online and open on my colleagues PC. I wonder if the smartart elements are causing problems, as I can see the formatting is messed up when I open the file on my Mac (before powerpoint crashes) I hope this helps.
